A common question we receive at MC Property Maintenance is: What do I need to self-hire a cherry picker? And while it may seem like a simple question, the reality is that there are complexities to this enquiry, depending on what you’re using the cherry picker for and the type of equipment you need to hire. Here, we’ve outlined some of the key points to remember when you’re hiring a cherry picker to ensure you have what you’ll need in place to self-hire safely.
What does the job involve?
The first step to self-hiring a cherry picker is determining if it’s the right machinery for the job. There might be an alternative you’ve not considered for the project or the setting that could be a safer solution. For example, if you only need to go straight up, maybe a scissor lift is a better option for your needs, whereas if you require outreach then a truck-mounted platform might be necessary.
Our cherry picker heights are measured from the ground and incorporate an average height for the operator, so it’s essential that you correctly measure the required raise to carry out the job safely. You don’t want to go too short and find that you’re having to reach to complete the job, which can increase the likelihood of injury. Likewise, getting a cherry picker that’s too large for your needs could result in you paying more than necessary. Keep in mind the limitations of the machinery and never attempt to push it beyond what’s safe.
Have you carried out a site inspection?
The site itself needs to also be checked for safety. This means checking the ground quality and overhead space, making sure the ground is flat and firm and there are no branches or wires overhead that could limit your access. If the ground is boggy or you’ll be working on a slope, you’ll need to ensure the model you choose can cope with the gradient. If there’s anything overhead, such as other structures or cables, this can also dictate the movement you’ll require from the machine. If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us and we can advise you on the best cherry picker for your needs.
Do you have a valid licence?
To self-hire a cherry picker, or any heavy machinery, you’ll need a full, valid driving licence. For any machinery over the weight of 3.5 tonnes, you’ll also need additional training to ensure you can operate the equipment safely. Our self-hire machinery is delivered by an experienced member of the team who can help you get to grips with the controls and how to use it properly. If you don’t have the appropriate licences, you can choose an operated cherry picker hire instead.
Is the operator experienced?
While there’s no legal requirement for operators to have a specific qualification to use a cherry picker, site operators or employers do have a responsibility to ensure their staff are safe on-site. For this reason, we would advise only having the cherry picker operated by someone who knows what they’re doing to minimise the risk of accidents.
Operators ideally should have the relevant qualifications for using heavy machinery – the most widely recognised qualification is issued by IPAF (International Powered Access Federation), with qualified operators holding a PAL card that certifies them with a Powered Access Licence. Having this licence provides peace of mind that whoever is operating the machinery has experience and the correct knowledge to avoid accidents and injuries.
In summary
Cherry pickers are useful for such a wide range of projects, but it’s important to do your research ahead of hiring this type of machinery to ensure you’re keeping yourself and those around you safe, and that you’re choosing the right machine for your needs. The above list of questions should give you a good starting point for things to consider when you’re planning on self-hiring a cherry picker to make sure you have everything you need in place.
