Pests are unwelcome guests at any time of the year but, in the summer, they can be especially annoying.
After all, there is nothing worse than enjoying a nice relaxed afternoon in the garden only for a wasp to start buzzing around your ear, sending you off in a flap.
To avoid this from happening to you this summer, it’s important to stay aware of the pests that could potentially ruin your day and potential health.
With this in mind, join us as we run through three key examples and offer advice on how to safeguard against their threat.
While it may come as a surprise to you, many pest control companies receive a huge number of calls over the summer to deal with bed bug infestations.
These microscopic insects may not be as immediately noticeable to the eye as most other types of pest, but they’re equally as annoying and could cause a range of skin issues.
To limit the likelihood of coming into contact with them, always check your accommodations for bed bugs.
Say you’re staying at a hotel in France, for instance, inspect the seams and corners of the mattress you’ll be staying on for black faecal matter. Then, examine the sheets and pillowcases to ensure there are no small brown bloodstains.
One of, if not, the most annoying summer pest is the mosquito.Responsible for causing a huge range of deadly diseases, these blood-sucking devil insects cause havoc throughout the summer months, travelling in clouds and biting everyone they can land on.
Don’t give them that luxury. Mosquitoes hate the breeze so make sure to have fans at the ready to keep them away from your property. Also, use DEET-containing sun-tan lotion to keep your skin protected from their bites.
Another summer blood-sucker, ticks love living in long grass and can cause Lyme Disease.
Since they cannot fly, jump or fall onto people, ticks instead search for hosts to climb on, lying in wait for a host (i.e. you) to walk past and insert their arms into.
Therefore, the easiest way to avoid exposing yourself to a tick comes through staying away from tall grass and wooded areas. However, if that’s not possible, make sure to wear trousers – this will force the tick to climb up your clothing, making them easier to spot.
